Peripheral blood microRNA markers in patients with papillary thyroid cancer

Perros Petros , Mallick Ujjal , Pearce Simon

Monitoring patients with thyroid cancer for recurrent disease relies heavily on measuring serum thyroglobulin (Tg). Tg cannot be assessed reliably in the presence of anti-thyroglobulin antibodies for analytical reasons, this being the case in about a third of patients. There has been recent interest in microRNA profiling of fine needle aspiration biopsies of thyroid nodules, with encouraging results. The objective of this pilot was to explore microRNAs in peripheral blood of p...

Cranioplasty for extensive skull deposit in the management of differentiated thyroid cancer

Putta-Manohar Sudeep , Cyriac Abby , Pearson Rachel , Mallick Ujjal , Perros Petros

Thyroid cancer if associated with bony metastases carries a poorer prognosis. Intensive multimodality treatment is usually necessary in management of these patients.Case: A 51-year-old female presented with hoarse voice in October 2005. Examination revealed a 3 cm left sided thyroid nodule and left vocal cord palsy. CT neck/thorax showed a multinodular goitre, with a dominant left nodule. FNA showed appearances suggestive of a follicular neoplasm. She un...

Testicular teratoma, testicular seminoma and papillary thyroid carcinoma occurring in a single individual: a report of two unrelated cases

Syed Akheel A , Jones Nigel AG , Roberts J Trevor , Mallick Ujjal K , Douglas Fiona , Perros Petros , Quinton Richard

We describe two unrelated men with a previously unreported combination of tumours. The first patient developed a right-sided testicular teratoma at the age of 25 years treated with orchidectomy. He went on to develop a left-sided seminoma at the age of 35 years, treated with orchidectomy followed by prophylactic para-aortic radiotherapy (30 Gy in 15 fractions). At the age of 48 years he developed a nodule in the left lobe of thyroid (AC4/Thy4 on FNA) treated with hemithyroidec...
